Pi Lambda Lambda’s _Health Initiatives – National Blood Drive Efforts Start at Home

Pi Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter | Third District | Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. | Prince William County, Virginia – On January 30, 2023 – the last day of National Blood Donor Month – Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter re-launched its support for local blood donations drive by sponsoring a Red Cross blood drive through its mentoring program and in partnership with a local middle school.  The PLL Health Initiatives Committee (HIC) and “Omega U – Potomac Middle School” Blood Drive was the Chapter’s first full in-person blood drive in several years, and its first since re-emerging from the constraints of COVID-19. Brother Johnathan Thomas, PLL HIC Chair, coordinated the flow with several Omega U mentees supporting the drive by directing donors to the donation station and by providing drinks and snacks to the donors, while nearly 20 Brothers from the Chapter supported and participated in the drive by setting up, running donor registration and check-in, and tearing down once the drive was complete.

With January’s totals, forty-one registered donors – including nine Brothers – came out to donate blood in person, with 35 donors completing their donation giving the event an 85% successful donation rating. The Health Initiatives Committee also continues to operate its “Dr. Charles R. Drew Virtual Blood Drive” through the Red Cross’s “Sleeves Up” campaign.  Through this branch, the virtual drive received three new donation pledges a few days prior to this event.

The Health Initiatives Committee encourages Brothers not to forget our Fraternity’s rich history in blood donation and blood banking due to the efforts of Dr. Charles R. Drew. Known as the “Father of Blood Banking”, he was enlisted by the Red Cross to start a pilot program that included innovations such as community donation centers in storefronts, factories, and ‘bloodmobiles”.  Dr. Drew was appointed director of the American Red Cross’s first blood bank in 1941, which oversaw blood for use by the U.S. Army and Navy.

Pi Lambda Lambda’s _Talent_Hunt_2021

Pi Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter, Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Prince William County Virginia | Pi Lambda Lambda | Third District – While COVID-19 guidelines are in place for in person assembling, the Pi Lambda Lambda (PLL) Chapter held virtually  its 17th Annual Talent Hunt Program on January 23, 2021 before over 100 guests to include a host of VIPs from the Prince William County School Board, Prince William County Board of Supervisors, and local governmental officials. According to Brother Dr. C. Victor Herbin, III., PLL Talent Hunt Chairman, “Our 2021 Talent Hunt program featured 4 outstanding and talented high school students within the Prince William and Stafford County that showcased their musical, dance, and vocal skills in grand fashion. In support of statewide COVID-19 protocols, these students presented virtual performances via the Zoom platform and Facebook Live before a nationwide crowd and we awarded a total of $2,500 in cash prizes.  In addition to the overall talent competition, we paid a tribute to one of our distinguished talent hunt judges, fraternal brother, and world-renowned musician, Brother Curtis B. Taylor, Sr., with a piano solo performed by his mentee Ms. Ashlie Peoples.  This tribute accentuated the virtual talent hunt with class, professionalism and esteem which generated a great deal of excitement and inspiration for the contestants and the audience.  It was truly impressive to witness the levels of success for each student as talented performers, unbelievably high academic achievers, and their dedicated extracurricular and community involvement. The talent, parents, audience, and of course the Chapter; truly embodied the Talent Hunt Idea.”

This year’s 1st Place Winner, Mr. Josuah Moises, a senior from Battlefield High School, in Haymarket, Virginia performed an amazing tap dance routine in the dance category. The 2nd Place Winner, Mr. Jawuan Hill, a senior from Colgan Senior High School in Woodbridge, Virginia performed a dynamic vocal solo.   The 3rd Place Winner, Ms. Ariel Wilcox, a junior from Colgan Senior High School in Woodbridge, Virginia performed a dynamic dance routine.

Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter believes in the Talent Hunt program and continues to cultivate youth talent by sponsoring middle school students’ talent performance on a non-competitive basis, and by holding tutoring sessions with underclassmen throughout the year. The Chapter also believes that the Talent Hunt is one of the few venues offering a performance outlet for young classical artists and the students and community truly embrace the Talent Hunt as a Grand Show and not just a competition that will change this year from previous years where he had a house full of people.

PLL thanks Brother Dr. C. Victor Herbin, III., Talent Hunt Chair; Brother Jeffrey W. Allen, Basileus, PLL; the George M. Hampton Foundation; Chapter members and supporters for dedication and hard work to make the 2021 Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter Virtual Talent Hunt a success.

Pi Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter, Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. On March 27, 2021, the Omega U Program was invited to a Stock Up Kids financial education presentation.  Stock Up Kids is a website platform that educates both young and old on key subjects of finance.  Kali, 12, and his sister Spirit, 11 teach beginners information on trading stocks and provide tips to veteran stock traders as well.

Stock Up Kids teach financial literacy is one of the lost important keys to our development. Unfortunately, it is not taught in schools and a lot of families do not educate this in the home. Without financial literacy, the financial decisions along with the actions we take or fail to not take can only lead us down a road of financial ruin and years of stress.

Sadly, financial illiteracy has become a generational norm. Nearly half of Americans do not have enough money to retire and forty percent of Americans cannot able to afford a $500 emergency expense. It is no surprise that most Americans can’t pass a basic test of financial literacy.

Stock Up Kids, because of their age, have amazed both young and old with their with their sound understanding of finance.  Even newcomers will be impressed with the way these youths teach complex things like trading fundamentals, techiniques, and charting just like top seasoned professionals. Their presentation gave us the knowledge encouraging many of us to manage our money correctly.

Even through the challenges of  Covid-19, Omega U will continue to provide mentorship to the students  in Prince William County, teaching them to strive for more than the boundaries that are set around them.

Omega U is operated under the management of PLL and has over 150 students annually from 3rd grade to graduating seniors. Even virtually, Omega U gives students a strong network of resources with college educated males in various fields from medical, engineering, teaching, military, and entrepreneurialism.

Pi Lambda Lambda’s Omega U Mother’s Day Celebration

Pi Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter, Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Prince William County Virginia | Pi Lambda Lambda | Third District – On May 8, 2021, the Omega U Program presented a Mother’s Day Celebration in honor of all the wonderful mothers.  There are a million things you could say about your mom: She's nurturing, smart, funny, loyal, loving, and well, everything else.

Mother’s Day is all about celebrating the woman who raised you and shaped who you are as a person. From all the packed lunches with napkin notes, to the bandages and kisses after falling off your bike, to being the first one to cry at your graduation– your mom was there for it all. It’s important to thank her for all the love and work she put in through the years.

  • The highest compliment anyone can give me, Mom, is to say that I’m like you.
  • I see you in things I do, I hear you in things I say — and I am proud of you.
  • Happy Mother's Day from the World's Luckiest Son.
  • Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who raised me into the man I am today.
  • Happy Mother’s Day to my “other mother.” I am so lucky to have two great moms.
  • Happy Mother's Day, thank you for everything you do for me and my family.

Omega U Committee would like to thank all the mothers who support our partnership in helping provide developmental tools to the youths they entrust us with daily.

Even through Covid-19, Omega U will continue to provide mentorship to the students  in Prince William County, teaching them strive for more than the boundaries that are set around them.
